NASA and Boeing are partnering to develop the X-66, an experimental aircraft designed to help the United States achieve the goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The aircraft will have long, thin wings with a set of aerodynamic trusses for support, known as a Transonic Truss-Braced Wing. The X-66 is the first X-plane specifically focused on helping the United States achieve the goal of net-zero aviation greenhouse gas emissions and presents a unique set of engineering challenges compared to a traditional commercial aircraft design.

We provide opportunities for those looking to take the next step in their systems engineering and integration career and to contribute to a unique Boeing-NASA partnership aimed at demonstrating and testing technologies that could lead to breakthroughs in sustainable flight and inform the designs of the next generation of single-aisle airplanes. The unique nature of this experimental aircraft makes the X-66 program a great place to see how both commercial and defense aerospace programs are executed on a rapid timeline.

The System Engineering Team is responsible for the development and execution of the X-66 Systems Engineering Management Plan and works closely and collaboratively with the program teams (software engineering, safety engineering, design, integration, test and more) to develop requirements, assess architectures and designs, identify safety risks and develop associated mitigations, and verify final designs meets program requirements and goals.

This position is best suited for those with strong critical thinking skills and the ability to collaborate and perform well in a diverse and geographical distributed environment.  Strong written and oral communication is also an important part of this assignment.

Responsibilities

  • Define requirements for aircraft, systems, and systems of systems
  • Concept of Operations (CONOPS) development
  • Functional architecture and decomposition
  • Risk, Issue, and Opportunity (RIO) tracking
  • Apply an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to plan, design, develop and verify complex lifecycle balanced system of systems and system solutions.
  • Evaluate customer/operational needs to define and coordinate system performance requirements, integrate technical parameters, and assure compatibility of all physical, functional and program interfaces.

Job Requirements

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Experience with aircraft development programs
  • Familiarity with model-based systems engineering tools, such as CAMEO
  • Knowledgeable in aircraft systems (electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, data)
  • Knowledgeable in hardware development and test of flight test programs
  • Effective at bringing diverse stakeholders together to accomplish common goals
